Smooth starts, so far...

Hello again, Blogonauts!

 Greetings from a Global Gateway!

My spring junket to northern Italy is almost underway! Evening departures from Logan Airport mean the bulk of the day is available to leisurely cart oneself to the terminal: no panic when the morning alarm sounds nor a hurried scramble to reach the shuttle bus. Online check-in worked flawlessly, my boarding pass is on my phone, and the security line was short and quick.

(Apparently, though, I'm wearing my age a little less well these days. One of the security attendants, in what I'm sure he thought was an act of kindness, asked if I'm over 75 years old. I resisted the urge to take umbrage, since he was trying to offer me the chance to leave my shoes on.)

Perhaps it's best to offer some explanation of why I decided so quickly to get out of town. While northern Italy has long lived on my bucket list of destinations, it now serves as a welcome distraction.

A month ago, I suddenly had to have my beloved dog Bergen put down. Until the morning of his death he seemed the picture of health.

At least most of the time, I don't doubt the decision was correct. But several times each day I come across reminders of his absence. For the first time in 35 years, there are no pets sharing my home, and I would rather not obsess on how to move ahead.

So my inborn itch to wander kicked in. And I am in good company. No less than Shakespeare himself had fantasies of northern Italy. He never ventured here, but my destinations are the settings or mentioned in several of his plays. To look ahead, my itinerary for the next two weeks includes Padova (Padua), Vicenza, Verona, Bergamo, and Milan. My plan is to ramble in ruins, ogle art, slurp spritzes, and devour delectable dinners. Plus I'll be snapping photos along the way.

Thanks for joining me. I'm going to let this trip be a source of joy, totally.

Blog to you later!
